Official language of Antigua and Barbuda

Updated: 2 days ago

Antigua and Barbuda does not have an official language de jure. The English language is only mentioned three times in Antiguan and Barbudan legislation, all three of which occur in the Constitution. All persons detained in a state of emergency in Antigua and Barbuda have a right to a "furnished statement in English" explaining the detention, and the other two mentions make knowledge of English a requirement to serve in Parliament. English is also mentioned in parliamentary standing orders as the main language of parliamentary proceedings. All legislation in Antigua and Barbuda is written in English. While English is used in most government activities, no legal document has declared the language official de jure as of August 2024.
